SmartMetric completes development of its self-powered fingerprint credit card

SmartMetric has completed development of its new credit card, embedded with a super thin, self-powered fingerprint scanner.

The biometric credit card is a culmination of years of research and development, which the company started developing in 2002.

According to a company statement, Chaya Hendrick, president and CEO at SmartMetric, insisted that the credit card had to be self-powered with a rechargeable battery so that the card could be used before being inserted into ATM’s and other types of EMC chip card readers.

SmartMetric said the new biometric credit card is ideal for bank card issuers to attract new premium customers while drawing high-spending technology adopters in all age demographics.

The SmartMetric biometric secured card is embedded with a fingerprint reader that scans and matches a person’s fingerprint in less than 0.25 seconds.

All of its scanning and matching is conducted inside the card without the need for a central online fingerprint database, providing the user with safer protection of their biometrics data and privacy.

Once the user’s fingerprint has been verified, the card is activated and able to be used. In addition, the card conforms to ISO size standards for credit cards including the thickness of a standard credit card.

The company is moving forward with industry testing and approvals for use of its new biometric credit card.

Earlier this year, SmartMetric commissioned research that found that 67 percent of credit card holders in the United States are willing to pay $69.95 for a biometric credit card that would provide improved security.
