Remark Holdings facial biometrics deployed to Hangzhou primary schools

The Hangzhou Primary School System has deployed the Smart Campus Solution featuring biometric facial recognition from KanKan AI to enhance campus safety, track student attendance, and support interactive, performance-driven learning, according to an announcement from Remark Holdings.

The Smart Campus solution is made up of integrated hardware and software, and provided at a cost of $8,000 per campus, plus recurring integrated software licensing fees and a professional channel subscription option for parents to view real-time video of their child on WeChat, the company says. The system can be used to automate student entrance and exit of the facility, control access to dormitories, laboratories and libraries, alert school administrators of unauthorized trespassers on campus, ensure students are only released to parents or other pre-approved individuals, and monitor school buildings for unauthorized objects, such as weapons.

Cameras are installed at school entrances, passageways, and campus buildings for monitoring without the use of RFID, turnstiles, or other potentially inconvenient methods.

“We are pleased with the initial success of our AI solution for school administration and campus safety, and that it has helped the primary school in Hangzhou to comply with the China Education Ministry’s mandate,” notes Remark Holdings Chief Executive Officer Kai-Shing Tao. “With the targeted monetization of our investment in Sharecare by the end of September, we are confident that the liquidity provided will strengthen our balance sheet and provide us with the necessary resources to rapidly deploy and expand upon our recently-announced contracts in the telecom and education verticals.”

According to the announcement, the initial deployment in a Hangzhou primary school reduced errors in attendance records and demonstrated time and money savings. The system also provides real-time alerts to teachers, and to parents through the popular DingTalk app.

KanKan AI’s facial recognition was also recently deployed to secure a fleet of taxis in Xi’an.
