Intercede, NitroDesk team up for smart card-secured email solutions

Intercede, a leader in identity and credential management systems known for its MyID identity management platform has announced a partnership with NitroDesk to provide secure email solutions on iOS devices, compatible with personal identity verification (PIV) smart cards.

Building on NitroDesk’s proprietary email client, TouchDown and Intercede’s proven success in the smart card and credential management space, this partnership will make it possible to exchange signed and encrypted emails protected by keys and certificates held securely on a PIN-protect PIV smart card.

“Email is the primary method of information sharing for two thirds of organizations but using a non-secure mechanism leaves them open to a range of threats,” Richard Parris, CEO of Intercede said. “The bring your own device (BYOD) trend and increased use of consumer devices means securing mobile communications is a challenge many of our customers are looking to solve. By partnering with NitroDesk, our shared expertise delivers a cost-effective, easy-to-use and highly-secure solution for mobile communications, enabling organizations to benefit from both improved security and increased efficiency.”

As reported previously in BiometricUpdate.com, Intercede recently launched its MyID CardChecker App for Apple iOS, designed for government agencies and enterprises to read and display electronic information from PIV smart cards on iPhones and iPads equipped with a Tactivo Smart Card Reader from Precise Biometrics.

This new version of NitroDesk TouchDown requires the use of a smart card reader for iOS devices, but the solution works with PIV, PIV-I (PIV Interoperable), CIV (Commercial Identity Verification) and TWIC (Transport Worker Identification Credential) smart cards.

A recent BiometricUpdate.com Biometrics Research Note suggests the demand for new technology, including smart cards will broaden the market for residential and commercial security products in the U.S. over the next five years.
