ImageWare granted new multimodal biometric authentication and enrollment patent

ImageWare Systems was granted a new multimodal biometric authentication and enrollment patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) earlier this month, the company announced.

Titled “Conditional and Situational Biometric Authentication and Enrollment,” the patent recognizes ImageWare’s invention of programmatic logic to conditionally select among different biometric modalities for authentication. The technology can be used for collecting biometrics on any device including camera, fingerprint scanner, microphone, iris scanner, kiosk or station, performing enrollment on a device and authenticating on a different one, or deployment of multiple biometric modalities within an organization depending on security needs.

“Our central mission is the promise of anonymity, which does not disclose Personally Identifiable Information (PII) throughout the journey of authentication,” said Kristin A. Taylor, President and CEO of ImageWare Systems, in a prepared statement. “Over two decades, ImageWare has developed deep technical expertise on complex federal government projects, and today we bring that defense-grade security to everyday use.”

With ImageWare Systems’ multimodal biometrics, users can authenticate their identity in any location and under various conditions based on situational and conditional authentication. Conceptually known as federation, users do not have to create new login credentials as their identity is created once and moves from a business or platform to the next. ImageWare makes this possible through the Digital Identity Platform, which integrates its IWS Biometric Engine and lets users leverage biometrics to create a single digital identity. By letting users authenticate as a person instead of as a device and keeping biometric data anonymous to ensure security, the IWS Biometric Engine ensures GDPR and CCPA compliance.

ImageWare recently named a new President and CEO to expand its multi-modal biometric and ID management offerings.
