Integrated chip (IC) makers in Taiwan and China are gearing up for an expected surge of shipments to meet increasing demand for biometric identification chips in 2019, industry sources told Chinese daily Digitimes.

Egis Technology (Egistec), Goodix, FocalTech Systems, Elan Microelectronics, Via Technologies, and Silead Microelectronics are among the companies expanding their offerings, such as algorithms, module hardware and chips. Increasing adoption of biometric solutions beyond mobile devices in household, automotive, industrial and FinTech applications are driving demand for optical fingerprint recognition, iris recognition, and face recognition chip systems, according to DIGITIMES.

Egistec has rolled out system-on-chips for the auto, home, and smart card markets, and is actively developing new 3D sensor chips and related algorithms. Optical fingerprint sensor orders from Vivo and Samsung could drive explosive revenue increases for Goodix in 2019, according to the report. FocalTech is working on comprehensive optical fingerprint chip application solutions, including module designs and backend engineering services, while Elan is focused on fingerprint recognition chips for financial cards and other segments other than mobile devices.

Facial recognition products from Via Technologies have reached the Chinese market, and Silicon Optronics is developing DNA sequence inspection technology, according to sources.
