GET Group NA brings NFC identity transactions to iOS devices

GET Group North America has announced NFC support for its GET Mobile ID Digital Identity Solution for iOS for identity transactions at points of sale, airports, and kiosks.

The new ISO 18013-5 standard enables NFC for local or online data transfer under the control of the device user, and Get Group NA and its global partner Scytáles AB say Get Mobile ID is the first technology to extend the standard to iOS devices. Get Mobile ID for Android already supports NFC identity transactions.

“Supporting NFC for both iOS and Android devices is critical to developing a variety of more secure and convenient retail, payment, and ID verification use cases for mobile driver’s licenses and other forms of mobile ID,” said David Kelts, Director of Product Development, Mobile Identity, GET Group North America. “We are proud to be participating in the development of the ISO 18013-5 standard, together with Scytáles AB, and committed to ensuring our technology will protect citizen privacy and meet specifications for secure interoperability on all mobile device operating systems.”

ISO 18013-5 is expected to be published later this year as the international technical and interoperability standard for mobile driver’s licenses (mDL). Kelts was recently hired by Get Group NA to lead its mobile driver’s license initiatives.

The companies say that the application enables age verification and payment to be performed with the same tap of a mobile device for age-restricted purchases, and the technology can also be used for identity transactions at stadiums, federal buildings, airports, and verifying identity and address for check cashing.

Roughly 15 U.S. states are working towards implementing mobile driver’s licenses, and Android is working on an IdentityCredential API to support their adoption.
