FIDO2 biometric authentication launched by Oracle, extended by Ipsidy

Oracle has announced the general availability of FIDO2 WebAuthn for its cloud identity service. Following the implementation of the new security protocol, Oracle-protected websites and applications’ users will be able to authenticate themselves with FIDO2 multi-factor authentication (MFA) as well as passwordless, biometric authentication.

The move is aimed at providing Oracle customers with a choice of authenticators (as the company already supported passwordless authentication before implementing the new protocol).

Face and fingerprint biometric authentication methods will now be available, together with hardware-based FIDO2 authenticators.

One of these is the YubiKey from Yubico, which launched biometric hardware tokens late last year, and which Oracle has already verified support for through Yubico’s Works with YubiKey program.

“It’s all about choice,” said Oracle Identity Vice President Jeppe Larsen, commenting on the news. “We need to maintain the highest levels of security throughout the authentication process and as we enable sign on to a wide variety of systems and applications. Many of our customers are large and complex with absolutely strict security mandates.”

At the same time, the company also wants to facilitate a user-friendly experience.

“Support for FIDO2 authenticators like YubiKeys gives our customers that choice for quick and easy passwordless authentication using the same keys that they use elsewhere.”

In another partnership with a biometric solutions provider last year, this one for physical access control, Oracle HR cloud saw the introduction of compatibility with Invixium’s IXM Titan devices, as part of a collaboration with Middle Eastern wellness company Fine Hygienic Holding.

Ipsidy partners with Wipro on FIDO2

Global IT consulting and services company Wipro Limited has selected face biometrics from Ipsidy to deliver passwordless logins compliant with FIDO2 protocols.

Ipsidy will provide its Proof and Verified facial recognition solutions to enhance identity assurance for Wipro users as they carry out digital transformation. The biometric technology will be used during enrollment as well as ongoing authentication. The FIDO2 capability is provided through the Verified Essential solution created in partnership with LoginID last year.

“Wipro is well-known for its market breadth and reputation for delivering innovative solutions to its customers as they grow their digital businesses,” states Ipsidy CEO Phillip Kumnick.  “We believe this agreement opens new opportunities for our business, as Wipro assists clients with the critical challenge of mitigating identity fraud and enhancing system security.”
