Cardless ATM transactions with mobile device biometrics introduced by Mastercard and Diebold Nixdorf

Mastercard and Diebold Nixdorf is introducing a new Cardless ATM at Money20/20 Europe, and has announced a pair of trials to test the integration of the companies’ technologies.

Cardless ATM and Mastercard Cash Pick-up both work with mobile applications on the recipient’s device. Cash Pick-up, which was originally announced last year, is a system for cash disbursement without an account, such as peer to peer payments, social benefits, corporate rebates, or emergency transactions. Cardless ATM enables users to find the nearby ATMs, view fees, and “snap or tap,” often using a QR code, and optionally to authenticate themselves with on-device biometrics, in order to receive cash.

Handling the majority of the transaction on the app, with biometric identity verification on the user’s device, and tokenized card information sent over Mastercard’s network, mitigates user concerns fraud, skimming, and ATM free transparency, according to the announcement.

Mastercard has also recently announced innovations with biometrics on payment cards, including a remote enrollment process developed with IDEX, and a pilot of a credit card with an embedded fingerprint sensor in Kuwait.
