Aware, FacePhi, and Nice have been honored for their innovative and user-friendly biometric solutions as the U.S. National Science Foundation and Amazon acknowledge ongoing research into fair AI systems.
Aware biometric authentication platform receives cybersecurity award
Aware announced that its Knomi mobile biometric authentication platform was awarded Telephony Magazine’s 2020 Cybersecurity Excellence Award. The award given by the magazine’s parent Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC), acknowledges cybersecurity capability and data protection capabilities in various platforms. Knomi was awarded for its network protection best practices and technology aimed at combating hacking and malware attacks. The platform also received recognition for its ease of use and its spoofing detection using liveness checks for voice and face biometrics.

FacePhi named top 5 finalist in Spain national technology competition
Face biometrics and mobile platform provider FacePhi has advanced to compete in the SME tech competition hosted by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and Banco Santander. According to Europa Press, the contest awards small- and medium-sized companies for their innovative efforts to provide local jobs and wealth.
SME 2020 marks the fourth edition of the annual competition that chooses from among 1,600 companies from Spain’s 50 provinces. This year’s overarching theme has been company performance in the fight against Covid-19.
Nice real-time authentication wins customer service excellence innovation award
Nice announced that its real-time authentication and fraud prevention platform has won the ‘Fight Against Fraud’ category of the UK Customer Service Excellence Awards. The company was awarded after the judges found that it best demonstrated and implemented effective and innovative fraud prevention technology.

Amazon and NSF award AI fairness prize
U.S. National Science Foundation and Amazon announced the 2021 awardees of the Program on Fairness in Artificial Intelligence. Awardee’s projects range from algorithmic foundations, human-AI interaction, natural language and computer vision, and AI decision-making used in hiring, education, criminal justice, and human services.
“NSF is partnering with Amazon to support this year’s cohort of fairness in AI projects,” said NSF Information and Intelligent Systems Division Director Henry Kautz. “Understanding how AI systems can be designed on principles of fairness, transparency and trustworthiness will advance the boundaries of AI applications. And it will help us build a more equitable society in which all citizens can be designers of these technologies as well as benefit from them.”
The award seeks to spur research into theoretical machine learning foundations and the impact AI is having on society and economy. The organizers hope to be able to initiate the sufficient discourse to ensure fair AI systems in a quickly emerging digital age.
