Android eID API support launched by Qualcomm, 5G smartphone biometrics provided by Goodix

Qualcomm’s new mobile Snapdragon System-on-Chips (SoCs) will be the first to be integrated with Android Identity Credential APIs and included on Android R, delivering support for on-phone ID cards, 9to5Google reports Qualcomm and Google announced at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit. The first news about the new APIs were reported and confirmed by Google in March.

The Snapdragon 865 and 765 will support credentials like mobile driver’s licenses, which are being launched in different jurisdictions and in many cases have biometric verification features.

Goodix’s ultra-thin optical in-display fingerprint sensor, meanwhile, has been integrated with OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren released in the U.S., tapping into the 5G market and disrupting biometric authentication solution standards, the company announced.

This is the first 5G application of the ultra-thin optical in-display fingerprint sensor, an extended feature within an ultra-thin module through revolutionary optical system and CIS (contact image sensor) design, according to the announcement. 5G devices come equipped with improvements such as higher transmission rates, multiple cameras, seamlessly smooth display performances, and batteries with ultra-long standby time.

Goodix’s new optical fingerprint sensor is the result of six years of R&D work in fingerprint authentication technology. The micro optics design frees up space to allow 5G optimization such as powerful cameras or high-capacity batteries, but also a more flexible fingerprint module location. The new and improved CIS and lenses design optimizes scanning signal and improves unlocking performance during low-temperature or strong ambient lights, as well as extending recognizable fingerprint types. The micro lens delivers an anti-electromagnetic interference performance and doesn’t need to be laminated to the screen.

“Goodix’s persistent pursuit of innovation aligns with OnePlus’ motto of ‘Never Settle,” said David Zhang, CEO of Goodix. “Goodix will continue delving into technological innovations with the goal of offering differentiating values to customers via quality products, and therefore enriching global consumer’s premium 5G mobile experiences.”

Goodix has also been recognized as “Best Financially Managed Semiconductor Company” at the Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA) 2019 in Santa Clara, CA.

“Being honored as the Best Financially Managed Semiconductor Company is a remarkable recognition of our perseverance on innovation,” said Dr. Bo Pi, CTO of Goodix Technology. “The only way to achieve healthy profit is to innovate. At Goodix, we have an unwavering commitment to innovation and to continuously create a new class of products for our customers. We believe this will drive our growth for the years to come.”

With the release of its in-display fingerprint sensor, Goodix claims to have reinforced its authority in human interface and biometric authentication solutions. Future plans include innovation in the automotive and IoT markets.
